The Benefits/Compensation Solution Specialist reports to the Director, Total Rewards and works in conjunction with the Benefits and Compensation Managers and other solution specialists. The Solution Specialist will contribute to the development and/or improvement of benefits and compensation policies, programs and solutions through research, market and trend analysis, best practices and data analytics.
 
Responsible for the creation of standards, processes, documentation and reporting of HR compensation and benefits programs that meet the business needs. Supports HR Operations in the successful execution and delivery of the programs through effective training and mentoring on a best in class consistent employee and leader experience.  Subject matter expert and serves as the second level of contact for complex escalated issues from HR Operations.
 
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Data & Analysis:
  • Manage annual salary/benefits survey processes including completion of market surveys, analysis of data, assess alternatives, calculate costs and make recommendation to ensure organizational competitiveness; prepare presentation of findings; ensure legislative compliance
  • Support the execution of the annual pay program calculations and payouts and annual base pay adjustments; audit to ensure accuracy and timeliness
  • In partnership with Procurement, as the subject matter expert, develops vendor RFPs, RFIs, SLAs, contracts; assesses and analyzes vendor proposals and recommends vendor changes; and HRIS to ensure systems meets compensation and benefit needs (salary structures, incentive programs, severance calculators, vacation system)
  • Participate and/or lead special projects as assigned (eg. Technician progression levels)
  • Prepare annual compensation budgets including base pay, incentives and other corporate-wide programs
  • Examine annual benefit pricing for active and retiree population to determine appropriate cost sharing; generates and assesses alternatives, prepare cost analysis and makes recommendations to set premiums
  • Calculates annual US/Canada/International allocated benefits rates for budgeting and tracks actual experience; calculates corporate IC/TVP metric results, retention payments for audit by the Compensation Manager
  • Uses data and workforce analytics to provide insights to drive recommendations and solutions for benefits/compensation related issues
  • Reviews the annual pension footnotes for year-end financial statements; prepares the annual executive compensation disclosure and ensures accurate reporting
Design, Plan, Execute:
  • Collaborate with the Benefits/compensation managers to design innovative and competitive benefits/compensation programs, policies and practices
  • Responsible for management of term assignments to ensure proper pay management; and Total Value Statements, changes in data and communicating updates
  • Develops annual compensation/pension education, delivers and measures effectiveness Conduct job evaluation as required either directly or indirectly with the assistance of a third-party provider
  • Works in collaboration with legal and finance on the program management of pension including valuations, Supplemental Retirement Plans, letters of credit, regulatory filings and notices, statements, etc.
  • Support Compensation/Benefits Managers and Director with Pension Committee and Board of Directors pre-reads and materials as required
  • Responsible for coordinating updated documentation for Compensation and Benefits Plan Documents, Summary Plan Descriptions, plan amendments, signed resolutions, etc.
  • Works independently of their direct leader, escalate as necessary for coaching and guidance
  • As a point of escalation from HR Operations – Tier 2, uses judgement to provide guidance and consultation regarding compensation/benefits program / plan interpretation
 
Qualifications:
University graduate with 5-8+ years of compensation/benefits experience or 10-12+ combination of education and related compensation/benefits experience; professional designation preferred e.g. Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBs) and/or CCP designation
  • Proven experience developing and implementing successful compensation strategies aligned to company strategies in a growing, multi-national company;
  • Strong technical expertise in North American compensation and executive compensation practices
  • Ability to influence and gain credibility with Senior Executives;
  • Must demonstrate flexibility and work collaboratively across all levels in the organization;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong technology skills including Excel, PowerPoint; SAP Success Factors an asset;
  • Demonstrates NOVA Chemicals’ values, creates a respectful work environment and supports the Company purpose and mission.
  • Demonstrated excellence in leading and developing effective teams across functional boundaries;
  • Knowledge and experience with Mergers & Acquisitions;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
